EP Special Hearing on Business and Human Rights with John Ruggie, UN Rapporteur, and ECCJ
On 16th April 2009, the European Parliament's Sub-Committee on Human Rights is holding a special hearing on Business and Human Rights. Highlights of the agenda will be John Ruggie, UN Rapporteur on Business and Human Rights speaking on his recent work, as well as our Ruth Casals, Co-ordinator of the European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) presenting the case for a stronger legal framework in the EU on behalf of the NGOs. There will also be speeches from John Morrison of BLIHR and academic John Wouters, who has recently been commissioned by the EP to produce a report on the legal framework of corporate accountability, and this promises to be a stimulating debate. ECCJ has been working together with the European office of the Jesuits, the network Fatal Transactions, IPIS, CAFOD and Global Witness to make this event a reality so the hearing will certainly have a strong civil society component. Above all it is an important opportunity to raise awareness of these issues and support for better regulation amongst the MEPs, experts and others that will be attending.
