What will India have to do to convince Apple to start producing iPhones in the country? According to Reuters, Apple has sent a list with seven demands to the country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi. Some Indian officials are skeptical, doubting whether various favours to Apple will be worth it.
Modi met Apple’s CEO Tim Cook last May to discuss possibilities for iPhone production in India. Three projects would be set up in the country: the assembly of iPhones, opening Apple stores, and refurbishing imported, pre-owned iPhones.
Five months later, in October, Apple sent Modi’s office a list with demands, calling on the government to “make the environment attractive”. Apple envisions tax concessions, a change in import restrictions for old phones, and expedited customs procedures.
On Wednesday, January 25, a meeting will take place in which departments of industry, IT and finance will meet Apple executives.
