On 8 September, the GoodElectronics Network sent a letter to SONY, expressing its concerns over unjust treatment of migrant workers from Myanmar who have been working for SONY Malaysia in Bangi.

GoodElectronics was informed about a case of 32 workers whose passports were misappropriated by a SONY company official – supposedly to renew them – but the passports were never returned to the workers.

In the letter, GoodElectronics encouraged SONY to:

  • Renew the work contracts of the workers concerned and ensure they get their passports back;
  • Ensure that workers working for SONY Malaysia always have work permits and that they are not forced to hand over their passports;
  • Take workers complaints and concerns at heart, and respect labour rights;
  • Enter into open and mature dialogue with local and international labour and human rights groups;
  • Take steps to bring all workers working for SONY, local and migrant, under direct employment of SONY to prevent future violations.

In a response letter dated October 10, SONY replied that it conducted a research, but could not find results of violating Malaysian law and Sony Group Code of Conduct.
