With over 50 participants from all over the world, the Round Table was a successful event, examining developments that currently affect the electronics sector all over the world. Pollution, child labour and high death rates in the mines were among the problems exposed by makeITfair last year in mining areas that supply minerals to the electronics industry. Under pressure from the makeITfair campaign, the companies - which had earlier refused to take responsibility for the violation of environmental and human rights -, have agreed to improve these conditions.

Today, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) published its report on Anglo Platinum and its conduct towards communities affected by its platinum mines in the South African region of Limpopo. The report confirms the findings of various South African and international NGOs like makeITfair that have addressed this case as an issue of ‘free prior and informed consent’.
