On 16th April 2009, the European Parliament's Sub-Committee on Human Rights is holding a special hearing on Business and Human Rights. Highlights of the agenda will be John Ruggie, UN Rapporteur on Business and Human Rights speaking on his recent work, as well as Ruth Casals, Co-ordinator of the European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ), presenting the case for a stronger legal framework in the EU on behalf of the NGOs.

The EMF European trade union conference on labour migration will provide an opportunity to consider the trade union response to current European Union policies. National examples as well as sector related cases will be presented and the challenges for trade unions when organising migrant workers will be also discussed. It is foreseen at the conference to elaborate a joint declaration on labour migration. This event will contribute towards an increased awareness of the impacts of labour migration among metalworking trade unions. It will also help to ensure that there is a strong focus on this issue in the EMF as well as those of affiliated unions.

From 3 - 10 October 2009, the EMF and IMF are organising a global campaign against precarious work. On 7 October 2009, the world day for decent work is taking place. The objective is clear: - The massive expansion of precarious work must be stopped - Where precarious work does exist, wages and conditions must be equal to those of regular workers and full coverage of social security should be guaranteed - Workers should be directly hired and indirect employment discouraged - Basic job security has to be guaranteed, as well as full protection in the field of health and safety Therefore urgent trade union action is required. The global action day is a clear signal to employers and governments all over the world that this is no longer acceptable.
