The government of Chile is suing mines operated by BHP, Albemarle, and Antofagasta (LON: ANTO) over alleged environmental damage caused in the northern Salar de Atacama salt flats.

The case highlights the deterioration of the Monturaqui-Negrillar-Tilopozo aquifer due to high pace extraction of minerals. The aquifer serves as an important source of ground water.

According to the Chilean government, the mines involved in the case have breached environmental protection, preservation, and conservation rules.
