The European automotive industry has submitted clear and concise R&D priorities to the European Commission to shape the European Green Car Initiative, announced by the EU last November 2008. The R&D priorities are outlined in an eleven-page document, accompanied by a press release. Four areas have been identified, all equally important:

•    Mobility & Transport

•    Energy & Environment

•    Safety

•    Affordability & Competitiveness.

For each areas priorities have been defined. Automotive manufacturers and suppliers call on the EU to adopt these priorities and implement them as soon as possible. Under the heading 'Affordability & Competitiveness', CLEPA and EUCAR list green objectives to be achieved at an affordable level, including taking into account the availability and use of raw and rare materials; the (energy-) efficiency of production processes; and the handling of alternative materials.

CLEPA

is the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, the European umbrella membership organisation representing the interests of the global automotive supply industry. 81 of the world's most prominent suppliers for car parts, systems and modules and 26 National trade associations and European sectoral associations are members of CLEPA, representing more than 3,000 companies.

EUCAR is the European Council for Automotive R&D, the European body for collaborative automotive and road transport R&D. EUCAR is an industrial association owned by its members, which are the 12 major European manufacturers of cars, trucks and buses.
