Lithium is being used for the lithium ion batteries of laptops, smartphones and electric cars. The latest is expected to increase more than thirtyfold by 2030, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
There’s plenty in the ground to meet the needs, but not enough mines. Battery makers are going to need more mines to support their production, and they’ll have to build them much more quickly than anyone thought. The increase in mines will affect the environment and human rights.
