Electronic workers often face serious occupational health and safety risks at work, including injury, exhaustion and exposure to hazardous chemicals. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has adopted a series of conventions and recommendations on occupational health and safety for employers to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. These standards provide useful minimum benchmarks, especially for countries lacking their own national occupational health and safety regulations.
GoodElectronics calls on brands to ensure that all workplaces throughout their supply chains are safe and healthy for all workers. We call upon electronics companies to comply with either ILO standards or national law, whichever provides the greatest protection for workers. In collaboration with the International Campaign for Responsible Technology and key allies, we have issued a Challenge to the Global Electronics Industry specifically on workers’ rights and the use of chemicals. Six key recommendations for safe and sustainable electronics manufacturing are laid out in Meeting the Challenge.
