Precarious employment
Many workers in the electronics industry are labouring under precarious conditions with little or no guarantee of employment stability. Informal, casual, seasonal, agency and temporary work are common throughout the sector.
Precarious employment is often coupled with denial of basic labour rights and social protection, as well as lower wages. Workers may be hesitant to join a union or demand better working conditions for fear of being replaced. Precarious employment is especially common among vulnerable groups of workers, including migrants, students, minorities and women.
Putting an end to precarious work is a key goal of the GoodElectronics network and its members. Together we advocate for more stable and secure working arrangements. We call on the electronics industry to restrict and reduce the use of precarious forms of employment, adhere to ILO conventions and guarantee labour rights to all employees.
