Governments and rights groups based in the west have expressed harsh criticisms on a new Chinese law on NGOs, arguing that it would result in many foreign organisations being forced to leave the country.

Despite months of lobbying, the law was passed by parliament on April 28. Under the new legislation NGOs will be under the Ministry of Public Security, which means that the police will be allowed to access their finances and work.
