The organisers of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo want to produce the medals using recycled metals from e-waste. This could help raise awareness about the importance of recycling.
The Nikkei Asian Review writes that the plan was first discussed in a meeting organized by a Japanese NGO and attended by Olympic organizers, government officials, and executives. While the generated e-waste in Japan amounts to about 650,000 tons per year, it is estimated that less than 100,000 tons are actually collected. There is thus a huge opportunity to improve the recycling rate and bring back precious metals into the electronics supply chain.
