Officially, special economic zones (or Ecozones) were created to “promote industrial, economic and social development and, by the way, give jobs to the Philippino people”. But in reality, Ecozones are first of all destined to attract foreign investors and “A trip around special economic zones” show that, for workers, Ecozones first mean low salary and bad working conditions.
French photojournalist Philippe Revelli portrays Cavite Special Economic Zone in a series of gripping pictures. Click here to go to the slide show.
Including an interview with Bambi Valenciano, legal assistant at the Worker Assistance Center (WAC), about Ecozones, working conditions, no union no strike policy, the position of women workers, etc.
