Long-term agency workers for Chinese telecom operator Unicom protested at the company office in Dazhou, Sichuan after their contracts were terminated.
While Unicom has relied on agency workers for a long time, the government recently introduced a policy to reduce the share of agency workers in the total workforce to ten percent. Unicom subsequently announced that it would resort to outsourcing, while many of their long-time employees would lose their jobs.
The protest of Unicom workers from across the country under the hashtag China Unicom Workers’ Defence League has been viewed online more than three million times.
