European battery and EV makers face nickel problems as tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to disrupt the supply chain. While the partnership of mining giant Nornickel and German chemical company BASF continues to connect the European EV market with Russian nickel, the search for alternative locally sourced nickel in Europe remains a challenge.
At the same time, Indigenous activists in Russia fear that they would lose leverage for holding Nornickel accountable for environmental justice. Russia is the world’s third-largest producer of nickel, and Nornickel is the world’s largest producer of the high-grade nickel needed for EVs.
