Malaysia has long been marred by forced labor issues, where workers’ passports are seized, and they must pay hefty fees for recruitment, work permits, visas, and housing. This debt bondage traps many workers in their jobs, making them highly susceptible to employer abuse. Electronics Watch recognizes the legal progress cited by the ILO report, but warns against complacency as much more needs to be done to fully protect workers’ rights in Malaysian factories.
