The electronics industry has long been concentrated in China. Largely for geopolitical reasons, the industry is now reorganising itself spatially, including by moving production to other countries such as Vietnam and India. However, this process has led to a remarkable increase in violations and protests by workers directly linked to factory closures and layoffs in China’s electronics industry. This paper from the China Labour Bulletin examines employers’ attempts to evade their legal obligations and offers insights into how workers can strengthen their bargaining power.
