Reporting on its participation in two concurrent events that took place in early February 2019, Investing in Africa Mining Indaba and Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI), IndustriALL notes that common ground was sought between the two during a one-day crossover event.

At the AMI event, where the focus was “Environmentally and economically sustainable mineral economies in an era of climate change catastrophe”, more than 50 participants engaged in focused discussions of the ‘social license’ given to industry to operate in a given area. Participants agreed that the rights of mineworkers and interests of communities where mining takes place must be central to mining operations. Discussions also focused on the unionization of artisanal and small-scale miners.

Worker health and fair compensation for illness were addressed in a petition delivered by AMI to Mining Indaba.
