The purpose of this research was to document an incident of mining waste pollution in the Luilu river (in the DRC) that occurred in the on September 9, 2016.

The incident occurred at Sicomines and the report aims to assess the company’s incident response and management processes, as well as the impact of the pollution on agriculture and health in local communities and how they were compensated. With financial support from GE, AFREWATCH documented the current impacts based on field investigation and populations testimonies regarding the contamination of the soil, vegetable gardens and the Luilu River. The report also highlights the problems found and proposes solutions to government and company decision makers.
