The global electronics supply chain makes heavy use of hazardous chemicals, putting workers at severe risk of exposure. The irresponsible use of toxic chemicals has led to numerous cases of occupational poisoning leading to increased rates of cancer, reproductive damage, birth defects, other serious illnesses and even death.
Companies are failing to sufficiently inform workers and their representatives about the health risks of chemical exposure. Some are even refusing to do so, claiming that such information constitutes a ‘trade secret’. Workers are not receiving adequate training and personal protective equipment. In addition to putting workers lives and health at risk, companies are violating workers’ right to know and their right to remedy for occupational illness or injury.
GoodElectronics, in collaboration with the International Campaign for Responsible Technology and key allies, has issued a Challenge to the Global Electronics Industry on the use of chemicals. Key recommendations on how the industry can improve are laid out in Meeting the Challenge.
