Foxconn shortlisted for the People's Public Eye Award for worst company of the year

07 December 2010

17 September 2010, SACOM, GoodElectronics and Bread for All sent in their nomination of Foxconn as worst company of the year 2010. The nomination of Foxconn is justified by a series of suicides at a number of Foxconn production facilities in China beginning this year, and by Foxconn as well brand buyers’ irresponsible and insensitive reactions to this human tragedy. Foxconn is shortlisted for the People's Public Eye Award. On-line voting for the shortlisted companies will take place between 10-27 January 2011. Keep an eye on the Public Eye Award and GoodElectronics websites to stay tuned with upcoming campaign developments.

The Public Eye Awards (formerly Public Eye on Davos) are a critical counterpoint to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Organized since 2000 by the Berne Declaration (BD) and Pro Natura (the latter replaced by Greenpeace in 2009), Public Eye reminds the players of the global economy who impact people and the environment with destructive business practices that actions have consequences – in this case for the image of the company. We present shame-on-you-awards to the nastiest corporate players of the year. Two of these (in the categories „Global“ and „Swiss“) will be awarded by an in-house jury of experts while winner of the people’s award will be chosen on this website by... the people. Starting this year (2010) we also present a „Greenwash Award“ to account for the rapidly growing number of institutions that fabricate social-environmental fig leaves in an attempt  to make inveterate corporate players look greener than they are.

Whether exploitative working conditions, calculated environmental sins, intentional disinformation, or other disregard for corporate social responsibility: At the forefront of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in late January, the most evil corporate offenses will appear on the shortlist of the Public Eye Awards 2011. And those firms placed in the pillory will feel the heat: the renowned (in)famous awards shine the international spotlight on corporate scandals and thereby help focused NGO campaigns succeed.

This year the award categories are:

  • GLOBAL AWARD chosen by an internal panel of experts and a

  • PEOPLE’S AWARD chosen via online voting
