Inside the sweatshops of China's Computer Hardware Production

This report is part of “ProcureITfair-Campaign for sustainable purchasing of computers.” It highlights working conditions in supplier factories of computer brands in mainland China. The objective is to connect fact-finding on labour conditions in the IT hardware production chain with concrete demands to public institutions like universities and municipalities, which are important customers for personal computers.

China is currently the world’s largest producer of electronic products. As in other developing economies, the transformation in electronics has been characterized by rapid upgrading from lowcost consumer goods to higher-technology items. Today, information technology (IT) is predominant – for example, the manufacturing of personal computers (PC), cell phones, MP3, and game consoles.
